I was meditating in the Ramana Ashram. It was the afternoon. Usually I’ll sit for an hour or two in the morning, then head back again in the afternoon for another hour or two. In the evening, if I feel a calling, I’ll go again. But mostly, I sit twice a day.

This particular afternoon, I was packing up my things when I noticed a guy around my age smiling at me. I smiled back and walked out.

As I was walking away, I heard someone call out, “Hey.”

I turned around. It was the same guy who had smiled at me. He’d followed me out.

He said hello and asked if he could ask me a few questions.

“Sure,” I said.

He told me he had been coming to the ashram every afternoon for the last few days and had noticed me sitting in meditation. Then he asked, “How have you gotten so still?”

I told him, “This is the home of my Guru. It’s easy for me here.”

He paused for a moment and then asked, “How do you connect with God?”

I replied, “I just sit quietly and let whatever thoughts come, come. The mind is like a rollercoaster. Let it move however it wants.”

He smiled, nodded, and thanked me.

I smiled back and walked away.
