My dad once told me that when he was younger, my grandmother used to tell him how special he was that he could have anything he wanted.

She apparently believed she was a white witch, too. That always struck me as unusual.

There’s clearly something running through the family line, but what exactly?

Was it the last name?

The energy?

Why was I the only Hatzis who seemed to know or feel anything about this deeper undercurrent?

Whatever she thought she was, I knew it wasn’t coming from a place of truth or love.

My aunty, my grandfather, and my grandmother had all kept their distance from us.

They wanted nothing to do with their grandkids, or even their own son and daughter-in-law. My grandparents have both passed away now, and my aunty is still out there somewhere, living her own life.

Whatever the story is in my lineage, no one ever handed it to me.

I’d have to uncover it on my own.
